Debit Card purchase

Hi Alex,

There was a Debit Card purchase for $2,500.00 at SAMPLE MART KINGSTON on your Scotiabank Debit Card at 03:45 pm EST.

If you didn't do this, call the number on the back of your card.

A made-up Scotiabank alert, set out the way Scotiabank sends them. The merchant, the amounts and the card digits are invented.

Turn on Scotiabank alerts

Scotiabank publishes these steps on its alerts page for Jamaica. The page doesn't carry a date.

The steps Scotiabank publishes

  1. Download the Scotiabank Mobile App if you don't have it, then sign in to Scotia OnLine or mobile banking.
  2. Open the Settings menu and choose Alerts.
  3. Switch alerts on and choose the ones you want, such as card purchases, purchases without the credit card present, credit card use outside the country, ATM withdrawals, transfers to others and bill payments.
  4. Choose email as the way you receive them. Scotiabank can also send a push notification to the app.

Scotiabank says customers registered for Scotia OnLine with a valid email address are enrolled in alerts automatically, so look in Settings before you assume they're off. It also says Scotiabank Alerts doesn't send text messages at the moment, and that signing up costs nothing.

What a Scotiabank alert says

Scotiabank writes its alert as two sentences and a warning. Here is the sample above, piece by piece.

  • MerchantSAMPLE MART KINGSTONThe merchant, written after the word at.
  • Amount$2,500.00A bare dollar sign means Jamaican dollars. A purchase in US dollars carries USD after the amount.
  • Cardyour Scotiabank Debit CardSome alerts add the last digits, written ***1234 or ending in 1234. Some only name the type of card.
  • Time03:45 pm ESTA time with no date. The alert reaches you within minutes, so the day it arrives is the day of the purchase.
  • BalanceNot includedCard alerts carry no balance. Scotiabank offers a separate account balance alert, daily or weekly.

The other alerts Scotiabank sends

  • A credit card purchase arrives as Credit Card used, and Scotiabank words it as an authorization: There was an authorization for $25,144.46 JMD at the merchant on your Scotiabank Credit Card ***1234. A card used outside the country arrives as Outside of country authorization.
  • Purchases without the card come as Purchase without card, or as Authorization without Credit Card present for a credit card.
  • ATM withdrawals, Bill Payment made and Transfer to a recipient each have their own alert. So does a payment received on a credit card.
  • A declined purchase and a reversed one arrive with the word declined or reversed in the subject.

When Scotiabank alerts stop arriving

Work down this list and stop when alerts come back.

  • Check the email address on your Scotia OnLine profile. Scotiabank asks for one the next time you sign in if it doesn't have one, so an old or mistyped address is the first thing to check.
  • Open Settings and Alerts and look at each alert type. Card purchases, purchases without the credit card present and use outside the country are separate switches.
  • Check how you receive them. Alerts can arrive by email or as a push notification, and only the email ones can come to EveryDolla. Scotiabank doesn't send texts.
  • If a purchase went through and nothing arrived, call Scotiabank and ask them to check the alerts on your profile.
  • EveryDolla gets your alerts through the Gmail or Outlook account you connect. If the email address Scotiabank holds for you is a different one, the alerts go to that inbox and none show up in EveryDolla.

An alert you don’t recognise

The alert itself says to call the number on the back of your card. You can also reach Scotiabank at 888-4-SCOTIA (888-472-6842), which its contact page lists as open 24 hours a day.

An alert that looks right can still be fake, because anyone can copy a sender’s name and address. If an alert asks you to click a link or share a code, open Scotiabank’s app or call the number on its website instead.

Use your Scotiabank alerts in EveryDolla

Sign in to EveryDolla and pick Scotiabank. From then on, the transaction alerts Scotiabank already sends you come to EveryDolla too, only those alerts. Each purchase shows up with its merchant, amount and card, sorted into a category and added up in J$.

A purchase in US dollars keeps its US$ amount and counts toward your total in J$. Declines, reversals, card payments and transfers aren’t counted as spending. EveryDolla never asks for your Scotiabank online banking password and it can’t move money. The budgeting app page shows how the pieces fit.

Some purchases never send an alert. For those, you can import a Scotiabank statement instead.
