How your pay is worked out
Your employer takes the deductions off in a set order, following Tax Administration Jamaica’s payroll guide:
- NIS is 3%Source: TAJ payroll taxes and statutory contributions, employee and employer (updated April 2025) of your gross pay, up to a ceiling of J$5,000,000 a year.
- Your statutory income is your gross pay less NIS and any approved pension. Education Tax is 2.25%Source: TAJ payroll taxes and statutory contributions, employee and employer (updated April 2025) of that.
- NHT is 2%Source: TAJ payroll taxes and statutory contributions, employee and employer (updated April 2025) of your gross pay, with no ceiling.
- Income tax (PAYE) is 25% of your statutory income above the tax-free threshold, and 30% on statutory income over J$6,000,000 a year.
What is left is your take-home pay. The calculator shows each step with your numbers under “How we worked this out”.
The threshold for your pay period
From April to December 2026 the tax-free threshold is J$158,530Source: TAJ Technical Advisory 042025/01/IT-TA: income tax threshold 2025 to 2028 a month, J$73,234.90 a fortnight or J$36,583.85 a week. Pays earlier in the year use the old, lower figure, and a yearly calculation uses J$1,876,614, the figure payroll uses for 2026 as a whole. Our income tax threshold page has every figure and the step due in April 2027.
What your employer pays
Your employer pays its own share on top of your gross pay: NIS at 3%, NHT at 3%, Education Tax at 3.5% of statutory income and, once its payroll is over J$173,328 a year, 3% to the HEART/NSTA Trust. None of it comes out of your pay.
Pensioners and people 65 and over
From age 65 you get an age exemption of J$250,040 a year on top of the threshold. If you get a pension and you are 55 or older, the pension exemption of J$250,040 a year counts against your salary too. Switch them on above and the calculator spreads them evenly over your pays.
